If you’re considering adding a pool to your backyard, there are many things to consider. Are you looking for something basic or will your pool have custom water features that make it stand out? Have you thought about the shape and size that will best fit your needs?
Sports Vs. Leisure Pools
The way your pool will be used will also be a large determining factor for the type of pool you choose. Do you need a sports pool or will a leisure pool be a better fit?
Sports Pools
The term “sports pool” often breeds confusion. When you think of a sports pool, you may be thinking of it in terms of what you will do in the pool. However, a true classification of a sports pool will depend on the dimensions of the base of the pool. A sports pool’s dimensions are made to provide equal footing on both sides of the pool resulting in a shallow to deep then back to shallow change of depth. This design is fitting for many sports such as volleyball or basketball. Most pools you will find in a backyard do not fit this definition.
Leisure Pools
Typical backyard swimming pools are leisurely in nature – hence the name “leisure pool.” These pools come in a variety of shapes and dimensions and can vary in depth. You may wish to have a shallow end on one side and deep end on the other or vary the depths from end to end. The main purpose of a leisure pool is to enable swimming and other “leisurely” activities.
Which Type of Pool Do You Need?
Many people think they want a sports pool but upon doing more research discover that a leisure pool will better accommodate their family’s needs. If you are a professional polo player who hosts pick up games on the weekends then perhaps the sports pool style is for you. After all, you can use this pool type to wade around in as well. However, this design is not best if your prime use is simply enjoying the outdoors while cooling off with friends and family. For example, people are used to the time old tradition of diving into a pool, after observing the depth of course. But with the sports pool the deep end is in the middle with two shallow ends on each side. This misconception can lead to damaging consequences.
